Product Management

Five levels describe how a product manager's scope, judgment and influence grow over time.

Product managers at KODE make sure we build the right things. They learn from customers and support, work with operations and finance leaders on priorities, and shape the work with the project lead before engineering starts. See KODE Kanban.

  • Every product manager's work gets reviewed, at every level. Briefs and plans get feedback, the same way code and designs do.
  • Product managers own the problem; the project lead owns the plan. Leading a project is an assignment, not a level.
  • Lead Product Managers and Directors of Product don't need direct reports. They need high influence across the organization.
  • People management comes later. Managing a team of product managers will be described on a management track.

The levels

  1. L1 · Associate Product Manager

Supports projects someone else owns, and learns how we find and shape the right work.

  2. L2 · Product Manager

Owns small and medium projects from brief to release, working with the business and the project lead.

  3. L3 · Senior Product Manager

Owns a product area end to end and leads large projects with little oversight.

  4. L4 · Lead Product Manager

Shapes the roadmap across several product areas with business leaders.

  5. L5 · Director of Product

Shapes KODE's product strategy for years, not just this quarter.
